Hi. If you’re reading this, you’re probably looking for a new dentist.

You’ve probably read a lot of “About the Dentist” pages with lists of schools and certifications. Is that really what you’re looking for? Do they really help you know who the dentist is, or how they will take care of you? Not really.

You probably already know I have all the requirements necessary to be your dentist. So this is going to be different. I promise.

What’s really important – and you deserve to know – is why you should trust me with you and your family’s dental health.

So here’s my story. I hope it helps you decide, and I hope to hear your story someday too!

(I do list all the typical “About the Dentist” information below, in case you’re interested.)

my story

  • Alberta Born & Raised

I was born in Banff, and grew up in Calgary. I was raised like children of hard-working immigrant families often are; learning about respect, humility, and dedication to doing the absolute best, always.

I first thought about becoming a dentist when I was 16 and still in high school. I did everything possible to get there — I studied hard, planned carefully, and lived in Edmonton for nine years while I trained at the U of A (the only dental school in Alberta).

Along the way, I also took every chance I could to ski, hike, and camp in the Rockies.

  • Small Town Experience

After I finished dental school, I moved to the West Kootenays, where I started practicing as a small town dentist (and a part-time ski-bum).

In small towns, general dentists need to perform every type of procedure, so from day one I was exposed to many different situations. I was forced to use all of my skills and become comfortable with every possibility.

That experience was invaluable and it makes me a better dentist today. Whether it’s an infected wisdom tooth, a bike accident with broken teeth, or a nervous child, I’ve seen it all.

  • Holistic Health

Living in Nelson, I was also lucky to be immersed in the concepts of whole-body health and wellness.

I started to think about how being a dentist means a lot more than being a tooth doctor — it means being a healer who can help you to be the healthiest version of yourself.

It became clear to me that dentistry should be fluoride-free, mercury-free, and as natural and healthy as possible.

I also saw how emphasizing dental education and preventative care could help you avoid problems, lower your dental costs, live healthier, and (last but not least) have a better experience at the dentist.

Now that I have two young sons, I’ve experienced how challenging it is to teach kids how to live a healthy lifestyle — and practice it as a busy parent.

  • The Mission

That might have been a long story, but I hope it helps you understand me and what I do for my patients. It’s also the story behind our mission:

To inspire you to have the best oral health possible.

Here’s how I would do that for you, should you choose me as your dentist:

Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you soon!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Jeffrey Ma

  • Certifications & Memberships

I attended the University of Alberta to earn a BSc. in Biological Sciences in 2005, then trained at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to become a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2010.

I attend many Continuing Education courses so I can apply the latest research and technology to treatment, with a special interest in orthodontics and CEREC ceramic dentistry. There are too many courses I’ve taken to list, and ultimately, I want to say that I take Continuing Education to be the best possible dentist I can be to serve you better.

I’m an active member in good standing with the Calgary and District Dental Society, College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta, Alberta Dental Association, and Canadian Dental Association.

I’m a volunteer dentist with CUPS Calgary and The Alex Community Health Centre, where I provide free dental care to the neediest and most vulnerable members of society.

  • Still Want to Know More?

OK, I’m flattered. If you came this far and still want to know more about your new dentist, how can I say no?

One of my oldest hobbies is obsessing over things with engines and four wheels, and how to make them go sideways, or fast, or both. I love everything from Camaros to M3s to station wagons.

If you’re into Star Wars, Star Trek, or the Marvel Universe, just bring it up at your appointment and we can geek out together. Iron Man vs. Darth Vader is a great debate if you don’t feel like talking about teeth!
